More than 35 million Americans suffer chronic lung disease such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, according to the American Lung Association. Lung disease and other breathing problems are the No. 1 killer of babies younger than 1 year old. Other conditions, including cystic fibrosis, lung cancer and AIDS, also make breathing difficult, according to the American Association for Respiratory Care.
